Living by Vow with Ruth Williamson

In Ruth’s words:

Walk slowly, mindfully and experience this remote Himalayan kingdom in deeply transformative ways. Bhutan is a country devoted to its Buddhist tradition. Every day is an invitation to practice.
The rituals and iconography of the Vajrayana tradition (also known as Tibetan Buddhism) are woven into every aspect of Bhutanese culture. Simple community here seems to soften the jagged edges of an independent Western mindset.
Experiencing this in your own way is the intention for our pilgrimage. We invite you to touch into a very different way of being in the world. Living by vow, dedicating the merits of our practice, joyfully embracing our common humanity…these are some of the ways we will learn from the humble Bhutanese. May it serve.
Consider the 14 day pilgrimage beginning in Bumthang, or 19  days beginning in Eastern Bhutan.
Please reach out directly to Cypress Himalaya/Jill G or Ruth with your questions.

“As rugged as the Himalayan foothills are; as distinctive as the festivals and villages, it is the sincere goodness of the Bhutanese that have touched my heart.”

A 3 ½ hour hike in total, it takes one hour to walk to the café where there is also a clear vantage view where you can see the majestic view of the monastery. In 747 AD, Guru Rimpoche (PadmaSambhava) chose a cave on this sheer rock face to meditate and assuming his wrathful form, Guru Dorji Droloe, he subdued the local deity, converting himself into the spiritual protector of Taktsang. His companion and consort, Yeshe Tshogyal transformed herself into a Tigress to assist him on his travels, then changed back into a female human companion and achieved the status of a female Buddha in her lifetime. Some people living in the valley saw the tigress lying by the cave and thought it was a Tiger’s Lair. Thus, the name tak (tiger) tshang (lair) came into existence and became one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the entire Buddhist world.
